Before you go ahead and read this, you must know, this is all personal advice, and I am assuming several things:
1. You have a PASSION to go medical school. I knew 100% when I was 15.
2. You have not gone to college already.
3. You are apt3 and willing to work hard.
4. You are naïve to the whole pre-med thing.
Now for the meat...
Choosing a university
First, narrow your scope. I wanted a degree in chemistry, so that really didn't help narrow anything down. If you want to major in something crazy, like deep sea vertebrate biology, you may only find a handful of schools that offer this - hence your pool of schools shrinks. On the other side of the coin, I knew I wanted a small school, within driving distance from home, where I could also play a collegiate sport. This narrowed it down pretty quickly, and once it was down to three schools, I went and visited them all.
Use your own criteria to narrow your choices down too. This saved me a lot of stress and time.
Next, the moment I stepped onto the campus of Butler University, I knew I was going there. I'm positive I couldn't have made a better decision for myself. I recommend that you have a similar feeling when choosing your university.
It was truly an "ah-hah moment."
